Phones

We got a landline after Miss M arrived and some of us started spending more time at home. Our cell phones do not work in our apartment very well. Something about living in a concrete city that limits the signal, I guess.

I really enjoy having a landline.

But. And we all saw a but coming.

Why haven't landline phones upgrade a little bit and create a backspace button. On a cell phone you don't have to hang up the phone and start again. You just delete the number and keep going.

How handy.

I realize this makes me extremely lazy but really wouldn't it be nice.

Books

I have been trying to read to Miss M. It's not yet a regular activity in our daily routine. She is still pretty young. And she still doesn't want to be held much without being walked around. So really it's like reading aloud to myself. Very entertaining.

We need to buy some of the plastic books because her interest in books lies in eating them.

We also need to put all books written by the Dr of nonsense in a box until she's at least one. Good grief. I read one book today by the Dr which was 62 pages long. They can be pretty long pages for a children's book. And really what are these books about. The one we read today was about various fish (one fish two fish) and by the middle of the book I swear it had nothing to do with fish. Another thing with these books, outside of them being really long for a four month old (and her momma), is that reading them aloud is difficult. The made up words and fragmented sentences are more than I can handle.

I think we'll stick to smaller less nonsensical books for now.

A few new things

We have had a slew of crazy storms in the past couple of weeks. This past weekend the rain water backed up into our building's basement. Our neighbor was gracious enough to come upstairs and tell us. Unfortunately for them this means their living space was flooded. For us, it just means that our storage space got wet. By the time we got downstairs to check it out the water had essentially receded but we were left with some mud on a few things. Fortunately, we have most everything in plastic tubs except bikes and a few other items, therefore nothing was ruined, just muddy.

So today I ran into our downstairs neighbors and in their attempts to deal with the water in their basement they are cleaning house. In cleaning their house they discovered a rocking horse and thought Miss M needed it. They have three kids and all are old enough now that they don't use it any longer. I think Miss M will like it...in a few months. Until then we just need to find a place to keep it.

Here's the horse.

We bought a tree a few years ago. Someone who works all the time wanted it. It was quite the production to get it in the car and up three flights of stairs (45 steps to be accurate) and potted in the kitchen.

As you'll notice it isn't a small plant. There were four trees all alive when we bought it. We named them after the four boys based on birth order and relative size. Drew died first, Nathan died second, Nick died third and the last one standing is Adam. I think next weeks' project (when Daddio is in town!!!) is to get rid of the remaining tree. It's rather unsightly. And it would free up a corner for a rocking horse and eventually a Christmas tree. We didn't put a tree up last year for various reasons. One reason was the lack of space but with Miss M and a free corner I think we'll be decorating for the holiday this year.

Before

After

Yesterday the girl decided that the paci isn't the worst thing in the world. I am not sure why I tried it yesterday as we've made it this long without it. I don't think it's a solution to anything except to give her something to chew on because she's been gumming everything. I think it looks odd in her mouth since she's never used it.

Seriously

So we got a brochure in the mail for a particular airline. We have a credit card with this advertised low fare flyer. The brochure is advertising bonus points. And all you have to do is spend $15,000 in a two month period of time. Yes, you read that correctly, $15,000 in two months. And for spending $15,000, the Company will graciously give you enough points to equate to $100. Is that a joke?

Also, when Miss M and I go on a walk, we walk by these apartment/condo buildings which state they are luxury living. Then when you look at the building you see window unit air conditioners. Maybe that was luxury living a few decades ago but last I checked window units don't scream luxury. It is possible that the window units aren't in use and have been properly replaced but seeing them is not a selling point. Although we aren't looking to move because luckily our landlord renewed our lease for a year. Phew. Moving is not fun.

There's more nonsense in this brain of mine but I can't think of anything else right now.

Oh. I did tell the money maker of the household that I would eat peanut butter for the rest of my life if he would just quit this job that makes him work so much. Well, I have been eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches and toast and I think I might have to take that statement back. I can't eat peanut butter for the rest of my life.

It's official

1. We are moving into size 2 diapers. I love online shopping.

2. We received a birth certificate for Miss M. And we only had to pay $50 for it. Thank you City. It's amazing you're still so broke.

3. Aunt Annessa is joining the circus. Yep. Miss M and I went to trapeze school to watch her. Okay. She's not joining the circus, but she could with the trapeze skills she's gaining. I bet she would meet all kinds of fun people!

Miss M watching the trapeze show.

4. Round 2 of family competition has begun. This month's challenge isn't too difficult. It consists of 1) taking a vitamin 2) drinking 40 ozs of water 3) not eating fried food.

No big deal right?

Nope!

But then the next month with no sweets. I heart sweets.

And the following month is no soda or alcohol. This is almost enough of a deal breaker for me.

Giving up soda. It just plain ticks me off. Why does it bother me so much? I have pondered this over the last few days.

This is what I have come up with...since having Miss M, I feel I have given up just about everything. Please note I did not say everything...but just about everything.

I have given up my body (not sure the stomach will ever look the same), my b@@bs (nope-she owns them for now), showering once a day, doing my hair (thank heavens for a ponytail -as unattractive as they are) and make-up, my bed (yes, I know I created this problem but that's not the point - point is it's given up), wearing clean clothes that don't smell of spit-up, and really the list could go on.

Do I mind giving these things up? No. Not usually. So why does giving up soda make me so sad. Probably because when the days get long something as simple as a soda makes it a bit better.

My goal is to stop complaining about it. It's still a few months away. I am trying to get away from planning on donating $30 to the pot. Maybe the competitive bug will bite soon. Maybe. It better bite hard bc I love soda a lot.

5. Miss M still isn't too into her bottle. I put some water in it yesterday to just let her play with it/practice and she wouldn't create much of a mess. She didn't hate it but it wasn't a hit. Same experience with a sippy cup. But she liked grabbing for and chewing on the sippy cup.

6. Our local Costco put in a gas station. The gas price was $.40 less than non-Costco gas station prices when I drove by the other day. I think Miss M and I will go fill up on cheap gas later today! Excitement!

That's all for now. Are you impressed with how exciting our life is?

Week in review (7/18-7/22)

We had family in town this week. We met them for dinner downtown on Tuesday night. I had to wake Miss M from her nap (at 7:30 pm). I was convinced she was going to freak out but she was great. There was one screaming episode so Uncle Larry took her outside so we could finish dinner. Ahhh.

The boys were all so sweet with her and wanted to play with her and hold her. They were excited to find out we owned a baby carrier and that Miss M owns sunglasses. They wanted their picture taken with their own Carlos (reference from the movie the hangover).

Look at her ENORMOUS picture hanging in the background. Yes, I know it's ENORMOUS.

We are back to trying out new toys when she gets fussy or just wants to be held. This one worked for a half hour yesterday. We will be putting it in the rotation.

She has also been obsessed with trying to eat this owl we got as a gift.

She still loves eating her toes. We still think it's hilarious.

Last night Miss M woke up around 3 and didn't go back to sleep right away like she normally tends to do. It wasn't a big deal. I don't really mind one or two night wakings. It was the every two hour night wakings that were driving me nuts, but I think I may have figured out the root cause of that problem. It was error on my part and not Miss M's. The poor girl is subjected to my learning curve. Anyway. She laid on her stomach for about 45 minutes with her head rested on the bed. I was pretty shocked because, as most people know, Miss M does not rest her head unless she's sleeping. I even got out of bed to see if she'd fallen asleep with her head down. She hadn't. But it was nice to know that she was comfortable this way and maybe someday (when she learns to roll back over to her back) she will enjoy sleeping on her tummy because who really enjoys sleeping on their back all the time.

I should note that she had her four month check-up last week and her stats were as follows:

Length: 25.5 inches - 90%
Weight: 13 pounds & 13 ounces - 55%
Head circumference: 75%

Dorothy Domestic???

It's not even noon and I have completed so much stuff it makes me wonder if I should start having people call me Dorothy Domestic.

I have gone to the grocery store, Costco, hauled groceries up the stairs, washed fruits, cut veggies, de-boned the rotisserie chicken, started prep work for tomorrow's dinner, and the list goes on.

Definitely Dorothy Domestic right!?!

But these things were done because we had to get out of the apartment because the cleaning lady was here!

I also dropped off and picked up dry cleaning because I strongly dislike the chore of ironing. I attempted to save a few dollars and iron a couple weeks ago but the shirts just kept piling up and the wearer of the shirts informed me that I didn't really do that great of a job. How does the dry cleaner get the collars so perfect?

Does that mean I lose my title of Dorothy Domestic?!?

Shoot. I tried.

M is up from her nap. It's playtime..inside of course since it could be record breaking temps out there today.

Stay cool and hydrated friends!

Same hairline. Could they be brothers?

Miss M's not sure why there is a half dressed man intruding in her picture with grandma!

My favorite. Look how she just melts into her uncle.

Take Two

A few weeks ago we put Miss M in the pool when we went to Indiana for a wedding.

It did not go well.

So this weekend when we went to the water park we decided to give it another try. Although this time it wasn't as much of a pool as it was a zero entry water area with for kiddos.

We started out slow by only putting her toes in the water. No need to make a scene if she doesn't like it.

Then we sat her in the water. It's safe to say that she liked it.

Birthday Girls

Ashleigh and Ella celebrated their birthdays this weekend. They are getting so big. Ella's getting school supplies for her birthday and Ashleigh is getting shoes that look like adult shoes (in size and style)! They are such good friends too. It's fun to watch them play together.

The Sweet Taste of Victory

When the Borders boys get together there's always a bit of friendly competition. This year the ultimate party planner created the Borders Family Olympics. There were a lot of activities. Here is a run-down of competition activities.

1. Pull tissues out of the box one-by-one. Picture below was post competition as evidenced by the celebratory hug.

2. Put as many large marshmallows in ones mouth as possible. This was much more difficult than I had assumed. I thought I would do well. I have a big mouth and I like marshmallows. Nope. Not easy at all. Eventually I couldn't breathe and that's not cool.

It's event harder to breathe when other people are making you laugh.

The winner was not distracted by goofy nonsense.

3. Spell words with spaghetti-o's. Some used their fingers and weren't afraid to get dirty while others were afraid to get dirty and lost that round!

4. Team event. One partner was blind folded and dangled a donut on a string over their partner who was supposed to eat it. Again. I thought I would rock this event. What part of this event doesn't scream my name. I am the daughter of a professional donut maker. We forfeited minutes after the competition started. It was more than I could handle. Being slapped in the face with a sticky donut was not my idea of a fun time. Not surprisingly, a brother from Cedar Rapids won this event with a smile on his face.

5. Bouncing ping-pong balls onto peanut butter sandwhiches.

6. Knocking over pop cans with a yo-yo by shaking your hips!

7. Obstacle course. It started off with a bike ride!

8. Something with wrapping a team member in toilet paper. I missed it. Mama D substituted for me so I could man Miss M.

I am sure everyone is anxious to know which team won...there was an amazing winners basket full of Ohio themed products...

...and the winner was the green team. Yep. Drew and I. Victory really is sweet!!!

The Borders boys. All of them. A good looking group.

Perks

Well I think it's safe to say that the city doesn't make living here the easiest. Yesterday Aunt Ness came so I could run downtown and get our city stickers for the car. Well, I came home empty handed. I didn't have the right documents with me bc a credit card statement isn't sufficient to prove your residence.

So I loaded up Drew, Miss M and myself in the car and drove back downtown. This time I was prepared with all the correct documents. And as things would go there was a significant line to wait in. But here is where the story gets good.

I got to the point in the line where a man stops the number of people in the room and he motions me to go to another area. I look at the area he is referring to and realize that he is having me to go the area for "Seniors and People with Disabilities". I waited for someone to come help me. It was a nice young intern who probably has more incentive to be nice than his full time counterparts. Or maybe he was just a nice young man.

Anyway, being classified with "Seniors and People with Disabilities" has never been so awesome. We were in and out of city hall much faster than we would have been if we were in the regular line.

Then we tried to go to Target. Someone screamed throughout Target. And that someone almost made someone else scream back throughout Target! Then she screamed for half thr drive home and now I am currently blogging from my phone in the car while she sleeps bc I don't have the energy to wake her up.

I think we will just chill until our appointment later today.

Four months old

Miss M is officially 4 months old.

She is still a pistol.

And when things don't go her way she isn't afraid to let you know, as evidenced below.

But then she can turn on the charm. I prefer the charm.

I had bought stickers for each month's birthday. She was fascinated with this month's sticker. She kept crinkling it and putting it in her mouth. I had to take it off the onsie because she had essentially eaten off the decoration on the sticker.

Aunt Nessa bought her new hair bows to ensure she's properly accessorized.

All the emails I get from various baby websites say she should enjoy looking in the mirror. She has minimal desire to look in the mirror. She did laugh at the mirror this weekend, but I think it was just an accident. She still can't roll back to her back after she rolls to her tummy.

Tomorrow we go to the doctor for four month shots. I am nervous for her. I don't enjoy the blood-curdling screams.

As I was up from 2 to 3 this morning, I wondered if it would be easier (for lack of a better word) to have kids really close together (in age). I wondered if it would be better to just not remember what it feels like to sleep again rather than get a glimpse of sleep and then have another baby and start all over again with sleepless nights.

No, I am not pregnant.

No, I am not considering another child right now.

These are just the things that go through my mind in the middle of the night. Miss M is enough to handle. I am not considering adding another baby to the mix or having another baby in a two bedroom apartment.

Miss M had her first kiss on the face by a d-o-g named Bubba.

She wasn't phased a bit!

Some R&R

This past weekend we loaded up the car and headed to Michigan for some R&R with some friends at their lake house. Packing with and for a babe is a lot of work when you have to tote everything down the stairs of the apartment but having your own Annessa makes life that much easier. She's coming over Tuesday too...I heart when school's out for the summer!

The car ride was two hours and Miss M was a great traveler. She has been revolting against the car seat so it's touch and go with traveling (or just going to the store). We left the city around 3 pm which means someone didn't have to work a full day! I love half days at work and leaving at 3pm is a half day.

We had a great time. Miss M was amazing on Saturday (even without a nap). I think the lake was calming for her and therefore for the rest of us too!

She was mesmerized by the lake.

We didn't put her in the water since we were on a roll with a happy girl. And since the pool episode from last weekend didn't go as planned we thought we wouldn't risk upsetting her.

She liked putting her feet in the water and moving them around in the sand.

Those are some pasty thighs. Yikes.

We got home early Sunday and enjoyed a bit more R&R on the couch.

Weekend with Grams

Gramma D came for the holiday weekend. We had a fun weekend. We tried a bunch of new things.

M tried a sippy cup. M wasn't impressed. We are going to keep trying. We didn't expect her to figure it out right now as she's still pretty young. I would like it if she figured it out sooner than later since she rejects the bottle. Most of the time M not taking a bottle isn't a big deal but there are times when it makes life more complicated.

We filled M's sippy cup with apple juice which is new for her too! However, I'm sure she wouldn't have liked the sippy cup anymore with milk. Trust me. We gave her some diluted apple juice because the girl who has been an excellent pooper has just stopped pooping. Unfortunately, the apple juice didn't get things moving. I think today is day six. She doesn't seem to be miserable or in pain. I called the doctor's office and they said it was normal.

But she does like chewing/sucking/licking Sophie.

We also tried cereal. It wasn't a success but it wasn't a complete failure either.

M got all dressed up. Not exactly a first but not exactly an everyday event.

She was fussing a bit and wanted to be held a lot. The Bjorn was in the car so we busted out the other carrier we borrowed from some friends. It might actually be an option. She liked it.

We went to a wedding in Indiana on Sunday. We decided to make life easier and stay overnight. Yep. We took the swing.

The hotel had a pool. I thought since M loves the bath and the pool is essentially a big bath then she would love the pool. Nope. She only liked the pool when she was watching from the side.

We will try again in two weeks when we head to Ohio, but I think my hopes of going to baby/mommy swim class, starting at 4 months, is out of the question. At least for a little while longer. Stink.

Well, all in all, the trip to Indiana was a success. On the way home we ended up heading to the outlet mall and driving around a few beach towns. We stopped for some pizza and gelato (a first for Gramma). Gramma and M wore their patriotic clothes.

And a happy Independance Day it was! Thanks for coming and playing and helping Gramma D. See ya soon!
